Urban Planning Students Gain Valuable Skills in Exciting New Training

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Nairobi recently held short course certificate training in ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Remote Sensing, Google Earth Engine, Google Earth, and Kobo Collect. The training was open to second year BA in Planning students, and it was held from June 10th to July 7, 2023.

The training was led by Dr. Silas Muketha, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment and Design. Dr. Muketha is a highly experienced GIS expert, and he brought his extensive knowledge and expertise to the training.

The students learned a wide range of skills during the training, including:

  • How to use ArcGIS to create maps and analyze spatial data
  • How to use AutoCAD to create 2D and 3D drawings
  • How to use remote sensing to collect and analyze data about the Earth's surface
  • How to use Google Earth Engine to process and analyze satellite imagery
  • How to use Google Earth to view and interact with geographic data
  • How to use Kobo Collect to collect data in the field

The training was a valuable opportunity for the students to learn about the latest technologies in Urban Planning. The skills they learned will help them to be more competitive in the job market, and they will also help them to make a positive impact on their communities.

The training was also a great success in terms of attendance. Over 20 students enrolled in the training, and the feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. The students appreciated the opportunity to learn from Dr. Muketha and they said that the training had given them the skills they need to succeed in their careers.

The training was made possible by the generous support of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Built Environment and Design. The Acting Dean, Dr. Samuel Maina, and Dr. Arthur Munyua Mwaura; Chairman of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning all attended the closing ceremony of the training, and they expressed their gratitude to the students for their participation.

The training was a major success, and it is sure to have a positive impact on the future of urban planning in Kenya. The students who participated in the training are now better equipped to use the latest technologies to make a difference in their communities.
