FBED Takes Centre Stage at UoN’s 75th Graduation Ceremony

FBED had even more reason to celebrate as M’Mwirabua Mark Murimi, a graduand from the Department of Architecture, was honoured with the opportunity to deliver the 2026 Valedictory Speech on behalf of his fellow graduands during the 75th Graduation Ceremony.

18 September 2026

The University of Nairobi marked a major milestone on 18 September 2026 as it celebrated its 75th Graduation Ceremony, bringing together graduands, families, friends, academic and administrative staff, government officials, and other members of the University community at Chancellor’s Court.

Among the thousands of students celebrating the culmination of their academic journeys, the Faculty of Built Environment and Design (FBED) stood out with a strong representation of approximately 326 graduands drawn from various undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes. The graduating cohort included one PhD graduand, Ruth Coletta Matayo, who graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Design, as well as graduands from three master’s programmes: Master of Arts in Construction Management, Master of Arts in Design, and Master of Arts in Planning.

The Faculty was also represented by graduates from several bachelor’s degree programmes, including the Bachelor of Arts (Design), Bachelor of Interior Design, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Arts in Planning, Bachelor of Construction Management, Bachelor of Quantity Surveying, and Bachelor of Real Estate. The diverse range of programmes reflected the Faculty’s broad contribution to education and professional training in the built environment and design disciplines.

FBED had even more reason to celebrate as M’Mwirabua Mark Murimi, a graduand from the Department of Architecture, was honoured with the opportunity to deliver the 2026 Valedictory Speech on behalf of his fellow graduands during the 75th Graduation Ceremony. His selection to represent the graduating class was a distinguished recognition of his accomplishments and a proud moment for the Faculty and its wider academic community.

In his opening remarks, Murimi said, “My name is M’Mwirabua Mark Murimi, a graduand from the Department of Architecture. It is both an honour and a privilege to stand before you today, representing a class with whom I have had the privilege of sharing this remarkable journey.”

He continued, “I stand here today not only as a graduate, but as a graduate architect. I am grateful to Triad Architects Limited for giving me the opportunity to begin my professional journey by absorbing me as a graduate architect, even before I formally crossed this stage. That opportunity is proof of something I want to speak to directly today: that the years we have spent here did not merely prepare us to graduate they prepared us to work.”

The ceremony featured remarks from the Chancellor: Prof. Patrick V. Verkooijen; Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayub Gitau; Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha; Chairperson of the Alumni Association and Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba; Their messages centred on the significance of education, innovation, leadership, and the responsibility graduates carry as they begin the next chapter of their lives. They also congratulated the Class of 2026 for reaching this important milestone.

For the Faculty of Built Environment and Design, however, the day was more than a graduation ceremony. It was a celebration of talent, resilience, creativity, and academic excellence qualities reflected in the hundreds of FBED graduates who now join a growing community of professionals ready to shape the built environment and contribute to society.

As the graduates crossed the stage, the years of hard work had finally become a moment worth celebrating. For FBED, having its graduating class represented by the University’s best graduating student made the 75th Graduation Ceremony a milestone to remember.
