On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the Faculty of Built Environment and Design was among the units represented at the University’s 2024–2025 Staff Performance Appraisal Awards. The ceremony also marked the signing of the FY2025/2026 Performance Contracts. It was a moment that linked recognition to responsibility.
Across the University, 421 staff members were honored for attaining an “Excellent” rating in the 2023/2024 appraisal cycle. Of these, 221 were women and 200 men. Twelve colleagues received Long Service Awards for between 30 and 40 years of uninterrupted service.
Chair of Council Prof. Chacha Nyaigotti Chacha reminded staff that the event was grounded in governance. “Today we celebrate merit, diligence, integrity, and measurable achievement,” he said. He noted that those recognized had exceeded institutional benchmarks and advanced the University’s strategic objectives.
Within the Faculty, Prof. Lilac Adhiambo Osanjo was named Best in Community Service. Her work extends well beyond lecture halls and design studios. She serves on the YMCA Kenya National Vocational Training Committee and trains disadvantaged youth at the National Training Institute Shauri Moyo in partnership with the Government and KCB. In the ACK Parish Council, All Saints Diocese, she coordinates mentorship programmes and mobilizes donations of food and books. As a Kenya High School Class of ’76 alumna, she supports scholarships for disadvantaged girls. She is also one of only eight “Simba” fellows in Africa under the Panafrican Design Institute, promoting African design education in tertiary institutions.
Several Faculty staff were also recognized for outstanding performance. They included Dr. Muketha Silas Mwiti of Urban and Regional Planning and Dr. Museleku Erastus Kiita of Real Estate, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. Mr. Stanley Kibe Gitonga, Ms. Anne Mwikali Wathome, and Miss Beatrice W. Ndungu from Urban and Regional Planning were honored, alongside Ms. Christine June Owino of Architecture.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Human Resource and Administration Prof. John Mande emphasized continuity. “Performance is continuous, not annual,” he said. He confirmed that Heads of Units will now conduct structured quarterly reviews before central consolidation.
Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Development Prof. Jackson Maalu placed the awards within a broader management framework. The University, he said, balances rewards with corrective measures to sustain productivity and institutional efficiency.
For the Faculty of Built Environment and Design, the recognition reflects steady academic contribution and sustained community engagement. The new performance cycle now begins. Expectations are higher. Documentation will be tighter. Results will matter even more.
