Keynote Speakers: 1st Annual Urban and Regional Planning Conference (URPC) 2022

The Faculty of Built Environment and Design in collaboration with Architectural Association of Kenya-Town Planning Chapter (AAK-TPC), Kenya Institute of Planners (KIP), and Town and County Planners Association of Kenya (TCPAK) will host the 1st Annual Urban and Regional Planning Conference on 25th- 26th October 2022.

The following renowned Scholars and experts will be making keynote presentations during the conference.

Dr. Remy Sietchiping

Dr. Remy Sietchiping is the Chief of Policy, Legislation and Governance Section within the Urban Practices Branch of UN-Habitat. He is currently overseeing the development of strategic programmes UN-Habitat including Urban Policy, legislation, governance, urban-rural linkages, smart cities, and metropolitan management.  He has coordinated global, regional, and country projects and programs for UN-Habitat in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He had previously worked on urban Health, land, climate change, urban and territorial planning. Dr. Sietchiping has over 25 years working experience in the UN system (UNECA and UN-Habitat), academia, private and public sectors and NGOs in Australia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Jamaica, and worldwide. He holds a Ph.D in Geography from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Prof. Sophie Schramm

Prof. Sophie leads lead the International Planning Studies (IPS) research group at the Department of Spatial Planning and the international Master´s pro­gram, at the Technical University of Dortmund. Her research is on manifold dynamics of city-making with a focus on heterogeneous infrastructure, planning, and housing in cities of the global South.  Has worked as part of a Research Group leader at Kassel University in the project “Dis-ordering African cities urban planning, housing, and infrastructures in Dakar and Nairobi” and as an Assistant Professor as the chair of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University.

Mr. Samuel Musumba

Samuel is a Programmes Manager - Road Safety Programmes and Data -National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). He is currently in the final stage of his Ph.D. at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He has MA in Project Planning and Management (UoN) and BA in Sociology (Moi University). He has various certificates in Road Transport Safety and Engineering Management. He has expertise in the following areas:

  • Projects and Programmes Management;
  • Road Transport Safety and Engineering Management;
  • Peace and Conflict Resolution;
  • Public Policy Development, implementation and Public Administration.
  • Coordination of Performance Contract Management and implementation.
  • Resource Mobilization for Projects, Donor contract Management;
  • Trainer of Trainers (ToT) on Road transport safety and management.

Mr. Kilion Nyambuga Nyowino

 

Kilion Nyambuga is the Data and Planning manager for Slum Dwellers International Kenya (SDI Kenya). His role focuses on ensuring that the planning and land advocacy work of the Kenyan federation of slum dwellers, Muungano wa Wanavijiji, and its professional support organs, Akiba Mashinani Trust and SDI Kenya, is strengthened by accurate data on informal settlements. A large part of his current work is with the Nairobi City County government and the residents of Mukuru slum belt, Nairobi, to help develop a community-driven Integrated Development Plan for the area—the implementation of which will address the unique development challenges and opportunities faced by the 100,000 households living in the settlement.

Since joining SDI Kenya in 2013, Kilion has also supported the global SDI network, which includes 17 African countries, in a groundbreaking transition from analogue to digital collection and management of data on informal settlements. He has been involved in peer learning exchanges—SDI’s primary method of knowledge transfer—for both community members and professional support staff, in 17 Kenyan cities as well as internationally in Liberia, Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Uganda.

Mr. Cyrus Mbisi

Mr. Cyrus Mbisi is a managing partner at Greenspace Planning and Environmental Consultants Limited with over ten years of experience in urban planning and environmental management. He is a Registered& Practicing Physical Planner and an EIA/EA Lead Expert.

Cyrus was appointed to the Physical Planners Registration Board (PPRB) in March 12th, 2021, for a period of three years.  He is the Chairperson of The Town Planners Chapter of The Architectural Association of Kenya, elected in April 2021 for a period of two years.

Previously, Cyrus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Nairobi in 2007
