University of Nairobi and New York University Urban Lab to Collaborate on Real Estate Studies

The Department of Real Estate, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying (RECMQS) is moving to formalize a new partnership with New York University (NYU).

On Wednesday, January 7, faculty members led by Chairman Arch. Peter Njeru met with Prof. Kwatinetz, Director of the NYU Urban Lab, at the Dean’s Office to discuss a collaboration focused on urban policy and real estate research.

The meeting outlined a framework for academic exchange that prioritizes practical solutions for the African built environment. Key areas of focus include:

  • Student & Faculty Mobility: Exchange programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including research attachments and visiting scholar roles.

  • Joint Research: Collaborative studies on real estate economics, with a heavy emphasis on affordable housing and urban challenges relevant to African cities.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Hosting joint seminars and developing case studies that bridge the gap between international research and local market needs.

A highlight of the talks was an invitation extended by Nicky Nzioki, President of the African Real Estate Society (AfRES), for the NYU team to participate in the 25th Annual AfRES Conference. The event is scheduled for September 8–11, 2026, in Kampala, Uganda.

This partnership marks a significant step for the Faculty of the Built Environment and Design (FBED) as it continues to seek global perspectives to address local urban pressures.
