Project Summary

Thesis / Project Title

AN EVALUATION OF EFFECTIVENESS OF ALTERNATIVE WATER SUPPLY: A CASE STUDY OF NAIROBI WATER CENTRAL REGION, ZONE 1

Thesis / Project Abstract

Water supply in urban centers is limited by the ageing infrastructure, low equipment capacity to serve the growing population of urban dwellers, low technological advancement levels by the institutions charged by water supply to the residents that rely on very old system of water supply management and vandalism of water pipes by unscrupulous metal vendors. The supply of water is crucial for growth and promotion of social wellbeing. Although, in developing world 20% and 50% of its residents have no clean water and reliable sanitation. These facilities access is not guaranteed due to inadequate infrastructure that are not easy to substitute. Hence, the study examined the model of water supply in Starehe constituency in Nairobi County, Kenya. The specific objectives were to establish factors influencing model of water supply in Starehe constituency,
Nairobi Kenya. To investigate the level of satisfaction in terms of efficiency, reliability and quality on model of water supply in Starehe Constituency, Nairobi Kenya. The design adopted was descriptive research design. Primary data was collected via questionnaires.
Descriptive and inferential statistics analyzed the data. Frequency and percentages were the descriptive statistics. Multiple regression

was the inferential approach. Figures and tables presented the findings. Study findings indicated that there was poor infrastructure,
unreliable and inadequate infrastructure for water supply in Starehe constituency. Further, supply of water was interrupted by vandalism
of water supply equipment and delayed replacement of equipment after breakdown. Moreover, regression analysis indicates positive
influence of infrastructure, institutional, Urban sprawl and
government policy on water supply in Starehe constituency.
Moreover, there were challenges associated with changes in
population. Government policies have positive influence on water
supply in Starehe constituency. It was concluded that there is need
for development of infrastructures aimed at ensuring that there is
continuous supply of water. The study further recommends for the
institutions involved in alternative supply of water to take into serious
consideration of the customer satisfaction, efficiency in supply,
reliability and the quality of water supplied to the households and
business sectors.
