81 FBED Students recognized for outstanding achievements

A total of 81 students from the faculty were prominently recognized during the University of Nairobi’s Students’ Recognition Ceremony held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Taifa Hall.  The students were honored for excellence in academics, sports, leadership, and service. Otieno John Odoyo was named Best Overall Final Year Student.

Donors who supported FBED students included Knight Frank, Basco Products (Kenya) Ltd, the Kenya Institute of Planners, Mathu and Gichuiri Associates, Ngotho Chartered Arbitrators, and the Joint Building Council. Extra-curricular and sports awards went to Serena Wanjiru, Karanja Kimani, Odhiambo Joseph, Omanyo Aurelius, and Samuel Mkutano.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Francis Mulaa said the annual event reflects the university’s commitment to developing well-rounded graduates. “This is about more than just academics. We are recognizing excellence in leadership, innovation, volunteerism, and sports. These students represent the true spirit of UoN,” he said. Prof. Mulaa thanked the donors and called on alumni and partners to continue supporting the initiative.

Prof. Winnie Kamau, delivering remarks on behalf of the Acting DVC Academic Affairs, Prof. Eng. Ayub Gitau, said the event was a reflection of the university’s broader mission. “This is not just a ceremony. It’s a show of the kind of students we are shaping – skilled, creative, and socially responsible,” she said.

The event attracted 107 donors who contributed KES. 2.645 million in awards. Some students also secured internship and attachment opportunities. Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Fund, one of the long-standing supporters, sponsors students to the tune of Kshs 10 million annually. Speaking on behalf of the donors, Mrs. Margaret Njoroge encouraged students to stay focused despite challenges stating, “Don’t lose sight of your goals. We celebrate your hard work. For those not awarded today, there’s always room to improve.”

The ceremony reaffirmed the university’s commitment to rewarding excellence and encouraging a strong culture of performance and service among students.
