Inspiring Start: Faculty of Built Environment and Design Welcomes First-Year Students

In a vibrant and inspiring event held at the University of Nairobi's Faculty of Built Environment and Design, first-year students were warmly welcomed by the Dean, Prof. Lilac A. Osanjo, alongside department chairmen and non-teaching staff. The event, marked by a series of motivating speeches, set the tone for the new students’ academic journey, emphasizing the balance between academic excellence and a fulfilling university life.

Prof. Lilac A. Osanjo, the Dean of the Faculty, delivered a keynote address that not only welcomed the students but also underscored the immense opportunities and responsibilities that lie ahead. “The faculty has aligned itself with the core mandate of the University—that is teaching, research, innovation, and community service,” she stated. “From today, you are now part and parcel of this mandate and mission, and in the coming days, you will begin to identify where you plug in.”

She highlighted the unique identity of the faculty, describing it as the "home of creativity and innovation specializing in the building industry and design." The Dean encouraged the students to fully immerse themselves in the diverse academic and extracurricular activities offered, which are designed to nurture their talents and potential. “Most of you are at the peak of your creative abilities, and I want to encourage you to exploit your talent in this area. The University has several avenues to showcase your innovations, including open days, innovation weeks, and even the Nairobi International Trade Fair,” she added.

The event also saw the introduction of the Associate Dean, chairmen of various departments, heads of non-academic units, and student leaders, all of whom played pivotal roles in welcoming the new students. Arch. Peter Njeru, Chairman of the Department of Real Estate, Construction Management, and Quantity Surveying, urged the students to take their studies seriously but also to enjoy their time at the university. “You are now at the best university in the region. Focus on being the best in your chosen program, but also remember that this is a time to build lifelong friendships and networks.”

Arch. Musau Kimeu, Chairman of the Department of Architecture, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of balancing academic rigor with personal development. “The academic journey is demanding, but it is also rewarding. Engage with your lecturers, participate in extracurricular activities, and take full advantage of the resources available to you.”

The Dean concluded her address with practical advice for the new students, urging them to read the student handbook, adhere to the university’s culture and ideals, and maintain high integrity and ethics. “Above all, enjoy your student life and ask for help if you are stuck. We are here to support you every step of the way,” she assured the students.

The event left the new students feeling welcomed and motivated to embark on their academic journey with enthusiasm and a clear sense of purpose. The Faculty of Built Environment and Design has once again proven its commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators, planners, and designers who will shape the future of Kenya and beyond.
