The Faculty of  Built Environment and Design warmly welcomed 2026/2027 first-year students this week Monday 24th Augast 2026, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter at the University of Nairobi.

More than 500 new students joined the Faculty across four departments: Architecture; Art and Design; Real Estate, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying; and Urban and Regional Planning.

The Faculty of Built Environment and Design (FBED) at the University of Nairobi proudly participated in the 5th Regional Research Conference, held from 19th and 20th August 2026 at the Kenya School of Government kabete- Nairobi.

The University of Nairobi officially installed its 9th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau, during a colourful ceremony held at Taifa Hall on Friday, 17th July 2026. The event marked an important milestone in the University's leadership.

The installation took place 65 days after Prof. Gitau's appointment and followed the University's long-standing tradition of formally ushering in a new Vice-Chancellor.

From 8 to 10 April 2026, five undergraduate students from the Faculty of Built Environment and Design stepped onto one of the continent’s most consequential platforms: the Second Africa Urban Forum (AUF2). Held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), the high-level summit placed these future industry leaders directly at the nexus of policy, finance, and sustainable development. They served as official volunteers supporting the Shelter Afrique Development Bank exhibition booth. For three days, they were not students observing from the periphery.

On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the Faculty of Built Environment and Design was among the units represented at the University’s 2024–2025 Staff Performance Appraisal Awards. The ceremony also marked the signing of the FY2025/2026 Performance Contracts. It was a moment that linked recognition to responsibility.

Across the University, 421 staff members were honored for attaining an “Excellent” rating in the 2023/2024 appraisal cycle. Of these, 221 were women and 200 men. Twelve colleagues received Long Service Awards for between 30 and 40 years of uninterrupted service.

The Department of Real Estate, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying (RECMQS) is moving to formalize a new partnership with New York University (NYU).

On Wednesday, January 7, faculty members led by Chairman Arch. Peter Njeru met with Prof. Kwatinetz, Director of the NYU Urban Lab, at the Dean’s Office to discuss a collaboration focused on urban policy and real estate research.

The meeting outlined a framework for academic exchange that prioritizes practical solutions for the African built environment. Key areas of focus include:

As Kenya’s cities grow faster and more complex, the need for skilled urban planners, architects and construction professionals has never been greater. That reality was underscored on January 9, 2026, when 20 students from the Faculty of Built Environment and Design at the University of Nairobi received the Future Urban Builders Scholarship.

The University of Nairobi held its 74th graduation ceremony on Thursday, 11th December 2025 at the Chancellor’s Court. The event saw the Faculty of Built Environment and Design present a strong cohort of professionals to the job market.

Faculty Dean Prof. Owiti K’Akumu presented the graduands to receive their degrees. The faculty awarded 1 PhD, 52 Bachelor’s degrees and 8 Master’s degrees.

In a significant step towards addressing Africa’s housing deficit, the University of Nairobi has entered into a groundbreaking strategic partnership with the Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB). The collaboration, formalized in a high-level meeting on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, aims to leverage academic research and innovation to create scalable, affordable housing solutions.
